Muddy Buddies Popcorn

Step up your popcorn game by coating it in peanut butter, chocolate, and powdered sugar–just like muddy buddies. It's sweet, salty, soft, crunchy, and oh so good.

Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow

I grew up calling the Chex cereal recipe where you coat it in a peanut butter and melted chocolate mixture and toss it in powdered sugar "muddy buddies." I know a lot of people call it puppy chow though! It's the same recipe, just different names.

Popcorn

I've tried this recipe with microwave popcorn and while it works, it does make the popcorn a little soggy. My sister suggested using pre-popped popcorn that you can buy in a bag, and it works fabulously! I used a sweet and salty one that already has a light coating that helps to protect the popcorn from the heavy peanut butter and chocolate.

Peanut Butter

This is a recipe that's tricky to use powdered peanut butter with, but it is doable if that's your jam! Since we're mixing the peanut butter with chocolate and water will make chocolate seize, mix your powdered peanut butter with melted coconut oil instead of water.

If you're a classic peanut butter fan, just use it as normal!

Chocolate

I almost exclusively use dark or semisweet chocolate lately because I love how it doesn't bring too much sweetness to my recipes. I love balanced desserts that aren't just sweet, but have some bitterness. If you prefer milk chocolate, feel free to use that!

Popcorn of the Month

I’ve always been a huge popcorn fan, so I’ve decided to start a new series! Once a month I’ll post a new popcorn recipe to change things up. This is the first in this series, so make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss any!

Muddy Buddies Popcorn

Ingredients

8 cups popcorn

½ cup chocolate chips

½ cup peanut butter

½ tsp vanilla extract

1 ½ cups powdered sugar

Method

In a large microwave safe bowl, add chocolate chips and peanut butter. Stir it after each 30 seconds to make sure it melts evenly and doesn't burn.

Add vanilla to chocolate mixture. Stir to thoroughly combine.

Pour popcorn onto a sheet pan. Pick out any kernels or pieces that might be too crunchy for your taste.

Add popcorn to chocolate mixture and gently toss to coat. Set aside.

In a gallon sized zip lock bag, add half of the powdered sugar. Add in half of the popcorn. Top with remaining powdered sugar. Toss to coat.

Add remaining popcorn and toss to coat.

Enjoy after the chocolate has cooled.

Store any leftovers in an airtight container and enjoy within a few days.
