Chia Margarita with Lime Jarritos
This bright and refreshing cocktail is a fun twist on a classic margarita, adding chia for texture and an earthy flavor.
You should all know by now that I love margaritas. It’s such an easy drink to like, so it’s no surprise that it’s loved by so many. That’s why I’ve decided to make August 2022 Margarita Month here on my blog! Make sure you’re subscribed and follow me on socials so you don’t miss anything.
Why Chia?
Chia seeds are a magical seed that blossoms, I guess some call it, when they’re soaked in liquid. They create this sort of gel around them while still holding a little crunch if kept whole. They’re used in puddings like my Red, White, & Blue Chia Pudding recipe, and drinks that you could only find in places like Whole Foods a decade ago.
Texture aside, chia also has some great health benefits like omega-3s, fiber, and protein. I’m not a nutritionist so use this information as a building block to do your own research if that’s something you’re interested in. I like adding them to drinks as part of an afternoon snack to help me feel fuller and hold me over until dinner.
Why Add Jarritos?
I don’t normally add sodas to my margaritas at home, but I also know how widely popular my Margarita Fizz cocktail is. Since this is a drink meant to be sipped over time to get through the chia seeds, I decided it needed to be “watered” down a little. I was originally going to use Simply Limeade, but unfortunately my grocery store was out of it. Thankfully there were still a few bottles of lime Jarritos, so I grabbed them. I’m glad I did! So good.
If you aren’t able to find lime Jarritos, feel free to use another lime drink or make your own. Just keep in mind you may want to tweak the agave amount in the margarita recipe so it isn’t too sweet.
Margarita Month
This is the first recipe in Margarita Month, but I have some fun ideas in store for us like margarita lemon bars, cupcakes, rice krispy treats, and of course popcorn. It’s going to be a fun month and I’m so excited to share these recipes with you!
Chia Margarita with Lime Jarritos
This bright and refreshing cocktail is a fun twist on a classic margarita, adding chia for texture and an earthy flavor.
Makes 2 servings
Ingredients
1 Tbsp chia seeds
¼ cup warm water
1 lime
3 oz tequila
3 oz triple sec
1 Tbsp agave syrup, to taste
12.5oz bottle lime Jarritos
Lime juice & sugar/salt to rim, if desired
Method
Add warm water and juice of lime to a jar/cup. Stir in chia seeds. Set on the counter for a few minutes for the chia seeds to soak.
Refrigerate overnight for best results, but you can use them after 10 minutes if needed.
Add tequila, triple sec, and agave to a mixing glass. Add ice and shake or stir to combine.
Rim glasses with lime juice and sugar and/or salt. Add ice.
Divide tequila mixture between glasses.
Divide chia liquid between glasses. Stir.
Top with lime Jarritos, to taste (I used the full bottle between both). Give it one last gentle stir and serve.
